HMS Bounty
The Bounty was originally a three-masted cargo ship, the Bethia built in 1784, purchased by the British Admiralty, then modified and commissioned as His Majesty's Armed Vessel the Bounty. The Admiralty paid £2,600 225 years ago.
The British Admiralty purchased the ship originally as a coal carrying merchant to operate along the English Coast. She was recomissioned in 1787 for a mission to Tahiti. Here she was used to collect Sapling Breadfruit trees and transport them to the West Indies, so that the owners of the Burgeoning British Plantations there could use them as a cheap source of food for its workers. William Bligh led the mission, and is argued to be one of the greatest seamen that ever lived. The ship itself does not survive due to being burned by its crew in what is now called Bounty Bay, on Pitcairn Island whilst awaiting rescue at the end of their journey.
You will also know her from the stories of Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, in Pirates of the Caribbean- Dead Man's Chest.
